Having a Recovery Mindset Can Help the Healing Process

Once again we are reminded of the process and not just focusing on the outcome. Recovery, as us clinicians learn, is hard for most people to surrender to. Whether recovering from an injury, surgery, being over trained and / or just generally being under-recovered due to current fitness and life hustling- acknowledgement of needing support might be the first step to healing.

We can put a lot of pressure on ourselves to feel “all better” right away- to have no pain, to not feel so tired during our workouts or daily life, quick return to sport or activity- RELEASE THE PRESSURE TO FEEL BETTER IMMEDIATELY. Instead of focusing on the end goal of no pain or full return to function- try focusing on the process getting you there.

Start asking yourself “what would help me feel just 1% better today”. This statement uses the Kaizen 1% better principle as a way to support your own self-care and healing. It’s hard and almost impossible to feel better immediately during the initial stages of healing. In some cases we feel even worse! Navigating self-talk of not doing enough, feeling achiness in the body from time away from regular training can be tough for those used to moving daily ….but there are some ways to feel 1% better and maybe to help you find ease in the recovery process.

Here are seven ways to help you ease in the recovery process:

  • establish a stretch routine in the morning or evening - mind+body connection.]

  • make sleep a priority.

  • make nutrient-dense foods a priority.

  • reach out to family and your social circle for support - CONNECTION!

  • go for walks + get outside

  • 5 minutes of deep breathing a day - activates the parasympathetic system to relax, restore and calm our minds.

  • start a gratitude practice for your body and what it does for you every day!

Each little shift in mindset adds up to bigger strides in healing and your overall recovery.
